The Half Nobody Thinks About

Two indoor heads give separate parts of a house their own comfort, but they both depend on the same outdoor unit. Most cleaning conversations stop at the indoor heads — and most stop at the filters before that.

Inside each head, the parts worth reaching are the filters, coil, blower wheel, drain pan, louvers and housing. That's where airborne dust, pollen, pet hair and moisture-related buildup end up during normal use. The filters are the only part of that list you can get at without taking the head apart.

Outside, the coil is where the system actually releases heat in summer and absorbs it in winter. Londonderry gets both ends of that — real heat in July, real cold in January — and the outdoor unit works hard in both directions. Let leaves, grass clippings, pollen and road grit pack into that coil and the whole system has to push harder for the same result. It's half the equipment, and it's the half that lives outdoors in the weather.

Cleaning both heads and the outdoor unit addresses the complete system rather than the one part that's easy to get to.

A Recent Londonderry Job

Thornton Road — Two Zones

A two-zone Daikin system — two indoor wall units and the outdoor heat pump serving them. The filters had gone dark, the housings underneath were speckled with mold, and both blower wheels had crusted over. Each head got a full teardown: wheel pulled and washed, coil, drain pan, louvers and housing cleaned, filters done. Outdoor coil cleared as well, and both zones tested before we left.

What a Deep Clean Includes

Full teardown of each indoor head — filters, evaporator coil, blower wheel, drain pan, louvers and internal housing cleaned properly, not wiped. Done per head, not once for the system.

And the outdoor unit. Coil and the area around it cleared of debris, so the system can move air and transfer heat the way it's supposed to in both seasons. That's included, not an add-on.

The heads stay on the wall. We bib each unit, drop-cloth everything underneath and run the wash water into a bucket — you can see the tarp in the photos above. Every zone tested before we leave, and you get photographs of each unit before and after.

Questions We Get in Londonderry

Does the outdoor unit really matter?

It's half your system, and it lives outside in the weather. That coil is where heat actually leaves the house in summer and gets pulled in from the cold in winter. Choke it with leaves, clippings and pollen and the compressor works harder year-round for the same comfort. It costs you nothing extra here because it should never have been separate.

I keep up with the filters. Isn't that enough?

It's more than most people do, and it helps. But look at the second row of photos above — that mold is in the housing, behind the filters, and the blower wheel in front of it had crusted over. Filters are the part you can reach. They aren't the part that smells.

What does a two-zone system cost?

$250 for the first head and the outdoor unit, $85 for the second — so $335 for this system, outdoor unit included. Full pricing is here.

Are you actually coming to New Hampshire?

Yes. Londonderry is an easy run for us — our service area reaches about two hours out from Bedford, Massachusetts. No trip charge, no fuel surcharge, same price as a job ten minutes from the shop.

Will you make a mess in my house?

No. We bib the unit, drop-cloth everything underneath and run the wash water down into a bucket. The blue tarp in the photos above is from this job — that goes up before any water does.
