What Lives Behind the Filter
Most people have pulled the filters out of a mini-split, rinsed them in the sink and put them back. That is maintenance, and it is worth doing. But the filters are the front door. They are not where the problem is.
Behind them sits the evaporator coil, and behind that sits the blower wheel — a long plastic cage of vanes that spins to push air into the room. The coil runs cold and wet. Dust that gets past the filter lands on it and stays. Over a few years the vanes of that wheel pack solid with a grey-brown layer that nothing sprayed through the vents can touch, because the vents are on the other side of the coil.
That is the part this page is about, and it is why a cleaning means taking the wheel out rather than wiping what you can see.
A Recent Cumberland Job
High Street — Five Zones, Fujitsu
Five Fujitsu wall-mounted heads on one outdoor multi-zone unit. The homeowner had found mold in the house and was working through indoor air quality. With that going on, the equipment moving air into every room mattered more than usual — so all five heads came apart rather than just the ones that smelled. Blower wheels, evaporator coils, drain pans, louvers, filters and internal housings on each head, plus the outdoor coil and the debris around it.
Watch the Same Cage, Before and After
Photographs flatten this out. A slow pan along the cage shows it better — the grey sitting down between the vanes in the first clip, bare black plastic and beading water in the second. Both clips are the same head in the same house, a few hours apart. No sound.
Cleaning After Mold Is Found in a House
When mold turns up somewhere in a home, the attention goes to the place it was found — a basement, a bathroom, behind a wall. The mini-splits usually are not on the list, because from the room they look like a clean white box.
They are worth adding to the list anyway. A ductless head is a cold, damp surface with standing condensate in a pan under it, sitting inside the living space, with a fan that runs air across all of it and out into the room. Whatever is in there does not stay in there.
To be straight about it: cleaning a mini-split is not mold remediation and it is not a test. If there is a mold problem in a house, that needs the people who do that work, and air quality questions need a professional who tests for it. What a cleaning does is make sure the air handlers are not the part everybody forgot once the rest was handled.
What a Deep Clean Includes
Full teardown of each indoor head — blower wheel, evaporator coil, drain pan, filters and internal housing cleaned properly, not wiped. Done per head, not once for the system. Outdoor unit cleaned. Every zone tested before we leave, and you get photographs of each unit before and after.
The heads stay on the wall. We bib each unit, drop-cloth everything underneath and run the wash water into a bucket — so what comes off your system ends up there and not on your wall or your floor.
Questions We Get in Cumberland
Are you actually coming to Rhode Island?
Yes. Cumberland, Lincoln, Woonsocket, Pawtucket and the northern Rhode Island towns are well inside our range — about an hour down from Bedford, Massachusetts, and our service area runs to two. No trip charge, no fuel surcharge, same price as a job ten minutes from the shop.
We found mold in the house. Do the mini-splits need doing too?
They are worth opening. The head holds a wet coil and a drain pan behind a wheel nothing reaches from outside, and it blows air into the room all day. It is not remediation and it is not a test — get the right people for those — but it keeps the air handlers from being the one thing nobody looked at.
What does a five-zone system cost?
$250 for the first head and the outdoor unit, $85 for each additional — so five heads on one condenser is $590. Full pricing is here.
Do all five of mine need it, or just the bad one?
We will do one if that is what you want. But each head has its own wheel, coil, pan and filters, and each one sees different hours and a different room — so whichever one you skip is usually the one you call about next. Doing the system in one visit also works out cheaper per head than two trips.
Will you make a mess in my house?
No. We bib the unit, drop-cloth everything underneath and run the wash water down into a bucket. What comes off the unit goes in the bucket, not on your wall or your floor.
